Earth Day: How we embrace sustainability all year round

Here at CommuniBakes, caring for our community goes hand‑in‑hand with caring for the planet.
As we celebrate Earth Day on April 22, we’re sharing some of the ways our small but mighty bakery puts sustainability at the heart of its daily work.
Reducing waste
One of our biggest commitments is reducing waste wherever possible.
As a community‑driven bakery created to support the charity Communicare, we aim to make thoughtful choices at every stage of production.
Profits from every loaf, cake and pastry help enrich the lives of vulnerable and isolated people across Southampton, ensuring that our efforts support both people and the planet.
Our sustainability approach includes reducing surplus where we can, and selling unsold food through programmes such as Too Good To Go, helping make sure good food never goes to waste. We were featured recently on the BBC for our work with this initiative and you can watch the footage on our homepage.
Working with nearby suppliers
Sourcing from nearby is another important part of our mission.
We’re proud to work with Uptons of Bassett, one of our much‑loved suppliers, whose ethically sourced meats are used in savoury bakes including our very popular and famous sausage rolls, made with Uptons’ high‑quality sausage meat.
Uptons has a rich heritage, founded by award‑winning butcher Simon Broadribb, whose family roots in food stretch back to the 19th century.
Their reputation is widely recognised, supplying well‑known chefs such as Hugh Fearnley‑Whittingstall and Rick Stein, and featuring in Stein’s book ‘A Guide to the Food Heroes of Britain’.
Uptons prioritises free‑range, local, ethically raised meat, with teams visiting farms to ensure high welfare standards – values that align closely with our own.
Reducing plastic
We also strive to make environmentally responsible packaging choices. Wherever possible, our products are displayed without wrapping and then wrapped in paper for customers to take home, reducing plastic use and helping shoppers make greener choices with every purchase.
At CommuniBakes, sustainability isn’t a once‑a‑year action, it’s something we fold into our dough, our decisions and our community impact every single day.
This Earth Day, we invite you to celebrate with us by choosing bakes that are people and planet kinder.
