Our top four bakery movies

When the summer comes along it may be time to think about getting your laptop out and watching some films on a big screen in the garden in the evenings.

Here are some of our favourite bakery related films:

Love Sarah

This is comfort food in film form. Sarah dreams of having her own bakery in Notting Hill. Then tragedy strikes and it’s up to her family and best friend to open it in her memory.

For Sarah’s daughter, Clarissa, the bakery becomes a place to find herself.

Celia Imrie also stars and whatever she’s in, is always worth a watch! It was released in 2021.

Wallace & Gromit – a Matter of Loaf or Death

This 2008 family favourite is full of witty bakery puns. It all starts when our ‘heroes’ Wallace and Gromit open a new bakery called ‘Top Bun’.

Business is booming. But there’s a sinister Cereal Killer on the loose, who has murdered all the other bakers around.

Gromit fears they may be next on the villain’s hit list, but Wallace is too distracted to care. He is smitten with Piella Bakewell, the former Bake-O-Lite bread commercial star. 

Julie & Julia

Although not completely about baking, this movie is full of baking bits and bobs and is based on a wonderful, true story. The brilliant Amy Adams plays Julie, who loves to cook in her spare time and is discontented with her career, or lack of it.

She decides to take on an after-work project in 2002 where she cooks meals for herself and her husband out of the well-known US cookery writer Julia Child’s cookbook. She blogs about it back in the day when blogging was unusual. The film, released in 2009, also covers details from Julia, played by Meryl Streep, and her husband’s, played by Stanley Tucci, life during the 1950s.

Moonstruck

This 1987 rom com is a little bit dated but is as a classic and has some of the key action based in a bakery.

It’s all about the sensible and pragmatic Italian bookkeeper Loretta, played by Cher, who decides to marry a man who is the reliable choice rather than the one ‘of her dreams’.

However, when she is sent to invite his estranged brother, Ronny, to the wedding, things take an unexpected turn.

Nicholas Cage who plays Ronny is at his feverish, hyper best as the explosive baker brother.
