Healthy walnuts!

Walnuts are an essential in the nutritional world and have a somewhat star status!
But at this time of year, they tend to take centre stage because they form part of our festive tablescapes.
Antioxidants
Originally from the Mediterranean and Central Asia, they have been part of the human diet for thousands of years and there’s evidence they were enjoyed in the Hanging Garden of Babylon, in ancient Greece and during Roman times.
These nuts contain higher amounts of antioxidants than most other foods and are rich in omega-3 fats.
Brain health
Diets rich in omega-3s have been linked to a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, inflammatory issues and certain cancers.
Eating walnuts may also improve brain health and help prevent cognitive concerns in later life.
They’re delicious eaten on their own as a snack. But they can also be added to any number of other dishes to enhance them. For example, cereals, soups, salads, pastas and many wonderful baked items.
Recipes to try
You can use them in a banana loaf to give extra crunch and we like them as part of our coffee and walnut cake here at the Bakery when we make it.
If you’ve time this week, here’s a great recipe for a seed loaf incorporating walnuts you could try too.
Come & see us
